University of Nottingham undertakes field upgrade with SIS Pitches

THE CLIENT - UNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAM

The University of Nottingham, celebrated for its extensive sports programs, turned to SIS Pitches to improve its sports facilities to match the demands of its student athletes.

THE BACKGROUND

With the highest number of sports clubs of any UK university and students competing across various levels, the University’s facilities needed to meet rigorous performance standards. Their existing artificial turf field, installed in 2008, required upgrades to align with modern requirements.

THE BRIEF

The University aimed to modernize its outdoor sports pitch to provide:

A surface tested to FIFA Quality standards for soccer and World Rugby regulations for rugby.
Enhanced environmental features like energy-efficient floodlighting and sustainable infill retention measures.
Improved functionality through expanded field dimensions, bespoke infrastructure, and integrated technology for multi-sport use.

WHAT WE DID

SIS Pitches undertook a comprehensive upgrade, including:

Installing SIS Grass Synthetic Xtreme Ultra, a premium monofilament surface with PU backing, produced in our state-of-the-art UK factory.
Upgrading to LED floodlighting for energy efficiency, adjustable lux levels, and long-term cost savings.
Implementing infill retention measures to support the University’s environmental objectives. Expanding the field dimensions to maximise usage.

Adding tailored infrastructure, such as:

8m high fencing with a custom lacrosse mesh.
Bespoke dugouts with lockable storage and integrated power and data points.
Football and Harrod soccer goals.

As well as incorporating technology, including:

A video scoreboard and PA system for live events and coaching playback.
A video analysis solution with live streaming capabilities.
CCTV for enhanced security

THE OUTCOME

The completed facility is a modern, versatile sports surface designed for intensive use. Thousands of students will benefit from the field, which accommodates various sports while aligning with the University’s sustainability goals.

SIS Pitches installed the original field in 2008 and were delighted to return to the University to upgrade the field. We have enjoyed working with the University of Nottingham on this project, and look forward to its completion, so the students can start to benefit from it.
