Running Track Surfacing: Full Project Management

We look after your project from start to finish, starting with our initial consultation. There, we’ll help you design a system that meets your requirements based on a wide range of track options available.

From there, we take care of everything. We’ll arrange a timetable for the installation itself, fitting our schedule around yours to minimize the potential for disruption.

What type of running track surface is right for me?

There are several types of track surfaces, and we can help you choose and install the right one for your track and field facility.

The type of track you choose may depend on your facility, budget and usage levels. If you’re unsure, our team can help you to decide whether a porous, sandwich or solid system would be most appropriate. The sections below include an overview of each type of running track surface material to help you understand the differences.

SURFACE TYPES

porous-track

POROUS TRACKS

POROUS TRACKS

One of the most common synthetic running track surfaces is a porous system. Porous tracks offer a cost-effective solution for facility operators looking to install a track for training and lower-level local competitions. The softer surface of a porous track makes it an ideal choice for schools and community athletics clubs. This system consists of two layers: a base made of black rubber granules bound in polyurethane resin, and a spray finish of colored granules and pigmented polyurethane.

NON-POROUS SOLID SYSTEMS

NON-POROUS SOLID SYSTEMS

Non-porous “solid” systems are designed for high-level competition and continuous use, offering a harder surface than other types of running tracks. As a result, this type of track is typically preferred by elite-level athletes. Solid systems feature a non-porous, full-depth construction made up of two layers: a base polyurethane flood coat with rubber granules, and a final flood layer of polyurethane topped with a rubber track surface dressing. Because this surface is impermeable to water, it relies on a slope toward a perimeter drain to keep the running surface free of standing water. This method of track construction delivers a high-quality finish and is recognized as a first-class surface suitable for international-standard athletics.

NON-POROUS “HYBRID” OR “SANDWICH” SYSTEMS

NON-POROUS “HYBRID” OR “SANDWICH” SYSTEMS

Often referred to as “hybrid” or “sandwich” systems, this type of track provides a non-porous, elite-level surface at a competitive price. It is constructed in two layers: a base of black rubber granules with polyurethane resin and a flood coat, topped with a rubber surface dressing. These tracks require a slope toward a perimeter drain to keep the surface free of standing water and maintain optimal performance. Hybrid systems are also significantly more durable than porous tracks, requiring less maintenance and reducing the need for repairs.
