SIS Air

SIS Air subsurface aeration system optimizes root growth zones to create a stronger playing surface and reduce field damage and ongoing maintenance costs.

COMPLETE SUBSURFACE CONTROL

Introducing SIS Air, a subsurface aeration and rainwater management system that gives you control over your field growth conditions at the root zone level and ensures you have a solution when weather conditions threaten game day. This animation shows how it works.

LAYING THE GROUNDWORK

Lateral drainage trenches are excavated, and geotextile-protected membrane layers are laid. Two 24-inch closed master main pipes are laid along the length of the field. 6-inch perforated air and drainage pipes run laterally at 10-foot intervals, with a gravel drainage layer installed and laser-graded.

A SUBSURFACE SYSTEM

Beside the closed main line and connecting lateral air pipes lies a drainage collector pipe that gathers water reaching the lowest level.

A gravel layer, irrigation system, and undersoil heating/cooling pipes are installed within an 8-inch sand layer, topped by a 4-inch root zone to complete the field profile.

WATER SEPARATOR

A concrete water separator is constructed at one end of the field, behind the goal. This underground chamber is airtight, equipped with submersible water pumps, and is used to pressurize and draw air through the network of pipes beneath the field.

PLANT ROOM

Within the stadium the SIS Air equipment features two-way powerful fans, heat exchangers, and air conditioning units for temperature control (optional), and control panels to manage the system. From here and from the grounds management room, teams can preset automated management or override settings to control root zone temperatures, water and oxygen levels can be monitored, and pressure or vacuum mode can be operated.

HEALTHY ROOT CONDITIONS

Pressure mode. Air is pushed through the network and is forced up, moving through the profile. This enables a cleaner, more aerobic growing environment, promoting cell division, root growth, and the absorption of nutrients. Carbon dioxide is released from the root zone and microbial activity is promoted, meaning grass is more disease-resistant.

MAXIMIZED HEATING OR COOLING

The upward movement of air helps with quicker distribution of warmth or cooling. This ensures less delay in supporting plant health, and consistent growing temperatures across the entire field are met sooner and more regularly.

VACUUM MODE

In heavy rainfall, vacuum mode boosts regular drainage and removes water from the field profile significantly quicker. The system will pull the water through the root zone and away from the surface, but also extract wastewater traveling in drainage pipes much faster for maximum efficiency. Regular maintenance routines will also benefit from reduction of dew and surface moisture as a result of improved surface airflow, stabilizing the field microclimate and keeping the surface drier for better play and durability.

SMART WATER MANAGEMENT

Conventional drainage will bring excess water into the water separator. Here, the water level is managed by a smart automatic sensor that monitors when water levels are high. Should the vacuum mode not be operated manually, the sensor will switch vacuum mode on when the water reaches a specific level. Vacuum mode will pull the water through the main pipes quickly, and the pumps will operate at the required speed to remove water out of the stadium and into the main discharge network systems.

LEADING THE FIELD

SIS Air is an innovative, star performer in the industry and has quickly become a trusted subsurface management system promoting the healthiest natural grass surfaces for sports all over the world. From cricket stadiums in the Himalayas to soccer stadiums in the Premier League, and arenas hosting the world’s biggest tournaments, SIS Air gives grounds management teams the reassurance they need when planning high-level sports events.

Field and Subsurface Benefits

SIS Air is an innovative subsurface aeration system designed to proactively manage soil moisture content and temperature, and to remove excess water from the soil profile. The SIS Air system can operate in either vacuum mode to pull water out of the field or pressure mode to push air through the root zone.

Root Growth

Air exchange improves root growth and plant health.

Disease Prevention

Controlling soil moisture helps prevent algae, black layer and other diseases.

Durability

Increases playing surface resilience to wear and tear.

Microbial Activity

Promotes healthier, more disease-resistant turf by increasing microbial activity.

Temperature Management

You can manage the whole temperature of the field through distribution of cold or warm air to ensure a consistent temperature throughout.

Undersoil Heating

Boosts the performance of undersoil heating during winter months.

Gas Transfer

Provides aeration and gas transfer in the soil profile in summer, forcing cooler air through the profile.

Water Removal

In extreme rainfall, the vacuum mode can extract water from the surface, reducing risk of game cancellation.

GROUND CONTROL

Our SIS Air systems are built with premium-quality materials, designed and installed by experts to help grounds teams deliver elite-level surfaces year-round. The SIS Air system is managed via an operator touchscreen installed on the SIS Air control panel in the plant room.

The system can operate either in manual mode, preset daily scheduled mode, or pressure-for-heat mode. SIS Air can be integrated with other systems, such as irrigation and heating, and fully automated through in-ground moisture, gas, and temperature sensors or via an external weather station.

SIS Air can be installed with the Formavoid system to create SIS Air Circulate, which helps reduce your water consumption.

Vacuum Mode

The vacuum operation works by drawing air down from the playing surface through the field profile. This can help with the release of carbon dioxide from the surface. Further to this, vacuum mode helps pull out dew from the playing surface.

This mode comes into its own during periods of heavy rain, maintaining near-perfect playing conditions while reducing unnecessary and costly postponements.

Pressure Mode

The pressure mode moves air up through the field profile bringing oxygen to the root network, as well as controlling root zone temperature effectively throughout all seasons.

This mode of operation can boost the performance of subsurface heating during the winter months, and cooling in warmer climates. The pressure mode also aids with providing a solution to the problems caused by shaded or sunny areas of the field.

SIS Air gives approximately 6 times more drainage capacity where it was tested against another non SIS Air stadium in Turkey.”

Air & Stormwater Management

SIS Air can also be installed with Water Product’s Formavoid system to create SIS Air Circulate, a combined air and stormwater management solution for optimal field performance.

What is Formavoid?

Formavoid is a 4-inch deep plastic void former designed to create strong columns and arches by integrating with fill material, leaving 60% open void space beneath for water management and storage. When filled with aggregates (approx. 1/25–1.5 inch particle size), it forms a stable granular base with improved water storage capacity.

Formavoid can be filled with 30% void Type 3 aggregate for subbase water attenuation or soil for green infrastructure applications.

SIS Air Circulate

SIS Air Circulate enables air distribution beneath the field, which can be heated or cooled for thermal control, while simultaneously managing drainage, rainwater, and irrigation water via cassette installation.

Harvested stormwater is stored in a void and recirculated for irrigation, reducing water consumption. Additionally, it maintains a minimal water table (approximately 2-3cm) to ensure ideal humidity levels for optimal root health.

Construct and Install

Our team can manage the entire installation process for you, as part of a field reconstruction. We ensure that the SIS Air system is installed correctly and that grounds staff are trained to use the system efficiently.

Supply Only

We offer SIS Air as a standalone unit for those who wish to install the system in their own construction project. Even when supplying SIS Air only, all installations are carried out by SIS Pitches engineers.
