Improving root health and water use efficiency

Combining SIS Air Core with Formavoid® technology, SIS Air AquaCycle creates an integrated solution for aeration, drainage, and smart water management. The system can rapidly remove excess water during storms, storing it beneath the surface for reuse. Additionally, air can be pushed up through the soil, improving gas exchange and supporting healthier roots and more resilient turf year-round.

SIS Air AquaCycle gives grounds teams better control over the rootzone conditions and water use, enabling an ideal growing environment while transforming how water is managed beneath the field. The result is a firmer, more consistent playing surface that maximizes field availability and helps clubs meet sustainability objectives.

How the system works

Water storage and reuse

By transforming the field subbase into a high-capacity reservoir, the Formavoid® raft eliminates the need for external storage tanks and traditional drainage pipes.

Rainfall that is not retained in the rootzone drains naturally into the raft, where it is stored for reuse in irrigation, significantly reducing reliance on municipal water supplies.

Any excess irrigation water also drains back into the raft, creating a continuous cycle that improves water use efficiency and lowers operating costs.

The Formavoid technology

Formavoid® is a 100mm deep plastic void Forma designed to create strong columns and arches by integrating with fill material, leaving 60% open void space beneath for water management and storage. When filled with aggregates (1mm–40mm particle size), it forms a stable granular base with improved stability and water storage capacity.

For sports field applications, a Formavoid raft is installed beneath the field and filled with 2–6mm drainage stone for water attenuation, enabling a storage capacity of up to 525,000 liters. In addition to water storage, the raft’s design provides low resistance to airflow and supports uniform pressure distribution across the field, which is critical for effective aeration and consistent rootzone conditions.

Within SIS Air AquaCycle, the Formavoid and SIS Air Core technologies are combined to deliver an ultimate aeration, drainage, and water management solution.

Vacuum mode

The vacuum and ventilation capabilities are enabled by the SIS Air Core system. The vacuum operation works by drawing air down from the surface through the field profile and into the Formavoid raft. This can help with the release of carbon dioxide from the soil.

Further to this, vacuum mode helps pull out dew from the playing surface.

This mode comes into its own during periods of heavy rain, maintaining near-perfect playing conditions while reducing unnecessary and costly postponements.

Pressure mode

The pressure mode moves air up through the field profile, bringing oxygen to the root network, as well as helping regulate root zone temperature effectively throughout all seasons.

This active airflow mitigates the challenges of uneven sunlight and microclimates in shaded areas. Furthermore, by distributing air more effectively, the system can enhance the performance of undersoil heating and cooling systems.

GROUND CONTROL

SIS Air AquaCycle gives grounds teams direct control of key field conditions. Vacuum and pressure modes can be managed to optimize water removal, airflow, and rootzone conditions, all from an in-stadium touch screen or mobile/tablet device.

The system can also integrate with other technologies, including irrigation and heating systems. Automation can be enabled through in-ground moisture, gas and temperature sensors, or via an external weather station.
