SIS Pitches’ Growth Across Professional Football

SIS Pitches’ Supporting the Football Pyramid over the past six months

Football’s many leagues are often described as a pyramid. Teams who work their way through these structures will eventually reach elite-level competition, where the most competitive, high-stakes games are played. At least, that’s the theory.

Only a small number of clubs can lay claim to this achievement. Luton Town being the most recent example in England, having secured promotion to the Premier League for the first time in its history during the 23/24 season. But it’s not just teams that work their way through the pyramid – many of the sport’s suppliers and partners also do the same.

This has been the experience for SIS Pitches, having installed its first professional football surface at Ajax’s Amsterdam Arena in 2001. Since then, the company’s stake in the sport has grown rapidly and, like Luton Town, we can now claim success at every level of the English football league.

But SIS’s work is not just confined to English football. The past 24 years have seen the company expand into several leagues across Europe, including those at the continent’s furthest reaches, such as Turkey and Georgia. At the same time, we’ve also been helping clubs further afield, such as Toronto FC, Chicago Fire and CF Monterrey. The latter project was unique full construction, featuring SIS Air, SIS Aqua and SIS Grass Hybrid.

To put it in numbers, SIS Grass Hybrid installs were up 44% in June, July and August compared to the same period in 2024.

However, not all this work has been properly documented. This article puts that growing list of projects on the map – as a statement of SIS’s growing footprint across all levels of competition across the world.

Supporting Half the Premier League for the 25/26 Season – Ten of the elite…

Since our first install at Manchester United in 2002, much of our work across English football has involved stitching a hybrid playing surface, either in the main stadium or at a club’s training facilities.

Arguably the most noteworthy of these projects can be found in Liverpool, where we recently completed installation of a SIS Air AquaCycle system on behalf of Forma, as well as stitching of Everton’s new pitch at Bramley-Moore Dock. Together, these elements form part of the most advanced football stadiums found anywhere in the world today.

…and plenty more across the pyramid

At the Championship level, we’ve stitched pitches at Birmingham City, Wrexham, and Derby County, the latter a returning customer, having had a hybrid pitch installed in 2015.

In League One, Wycombe Wanderers, Stevenage, and Mansfield have all received either a hybrid or artificial surface, and the same goes for Colchester United, Swindon Town, Notts County, and Stockport County in League Two. Our work in Stockport was recently singled out, helping the team win the EFL’s Grounds Team of the Season award two years in a row.

But it’s not just the upper tiers of English football that see the value of a more durable, high-performance surface.

Lower-league teams have also embraced the concept, sometimes because they recognise the difference it’s made higher up the pyramid, and other times simply because they want what the bigger clubs have. In the case of Hednesford Town, it was the latter.

Reaching where east meets west

We’ve completed some of our most standout projects across the three biggest leagues on the continent’s mainland – the Bundesliga, Serie A and La Liga.

Across these leagues, SIS has worked with Hamburg SV, Borussia Monchengladbach, Genoa, Inter Milan and Barcelona. With the Catalan giants, SIS has been able to add some of the most recognisable stadia and facilities to its portfolio, including the Johan Cruyff Arena and, perhaps the most famous football ground of them all, the Spotify Camp Nou.

In Turkey, the team has delivered new playing surfaces for Besiktas, Kasimpasa, Galatasaray, Diyarbakir Stadium and the Turkish FA. And it’s a similar story in Georgia, where projects continue to grow. Some standouts include the Mikheil Meskhi Stadium in Tbilisi – the country’s second-largest stadium – as well as a string of other grounds associated with the Georgian FA.

North of England’s border is also host to some notable projects – and some of our oldest. We’ve been working with Celtic for more than 20 years, both at Hampden Park and the club’s training facilities. In 2025, we headed to the other side of the city to work with Rangers, preparing the grounds for their new season.

Within this summary, we’ve missed off many other important sites – not least those in Hungary, Czech Republic, Iceland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark – such is the level of demand for SIS installations right now.

It would also be remiss to not mention the more than one million square metres of professional sports grass we are maintaining in the Middle East. But this article goes some way to addressing the exceptional work taking place at every level of professional football, much of it receiving less than the attention it really deserves.
