From Field To Fibre - Manufacturing Process

Bio-X is engineered through a carefully controlled manufacturing process that transforms renewable raw materials into high-performance fibers. From plant-based inputs to precision extrusion, every stage is designed to deliver the strength and consistency required for elite surface performance – while maintaining full biodegradability at end-of-life.

Material Sourcing

Ingredients derived from corn plant sugars, sugarcane plant sugars, and bacteria - 100% renewable origins.

Biopolymer synthesis

Raw materials are converted into high-performance biopolymers with properties engineered to match conventional synthetics.

Stabilisation

A state-of-the-art biodegradable masterbatch (UV stailisers, anti-static, colour and more) is added for pigmentation, climate adaptation, and ease of processing.

Extrusion

Pellets are processed into Bio-X™ Fiber using specialised machinery - fully compatible with existing installation systems.

DESIGNED TO DISAPPEAR

NO PERSISTENT MICROPLASTICS

Just like conventional hybrid fibers, Bio-X™ Fiber provides reinforcement in the ground, delivering a stronger, more durable surface with increased playability. After pitch removal, it is designed to fully disintegrate within 12 weeks under controlled industrial composting conditions.

EFFICIENT REMOVAL

Top layer of turf with Bio-X fibers removed using standard frazemowing machinery and transported to a local industrial composting facility. No specialised equipment required.

INDUSTRIAL COMPOSTING

In a controlled environment (high moisture, up to 75°C), microorganisms digest the fibers alongside the turf, converting the material into stabilised organic matter within 12 weeks.

NUTRIENT RETURN

The result is high-quality compost, free from persistent microplastics, returned to the soil - often used in agriculture. A true circular outcome.

End-of-life comparison

Bio-X provides a more responsible end-of-life solution. Unlike traditional hybrid systems that leave persistent synthetic fibers in the ground, Bio-X is designed to break down naturally or be industrially composted, reducing environmental impact and simplifying future pitch installation.

FAQS

Does biodegradable mean it won’t last?

Degradation depends on environmental conditions (e.g. temperature, microbial activity, oxygen availability etc). Bio‑X™
is designed to remain stable in use and degrade under industrial composting conditions.

What materials are used?

The exact formulation is proprietary; however, the polymer classes and certified composition can be disclosed at a summary level. In short, Bio‑X™ is composed of PLA & PBAT, with a biodegradable masterbatch for pigmentation and performance.

Is Bio X™ safe for players and the environment?

Yes. Core materials are FDA Food Contact approved, non toxic and handled as inert. The fiber is PFAS free and supported by material safety documentation.

What certifications are achieved or underway? What other testing has been carried out?

Achieved

TÜV AUSTRIA OK Biobased – Class 2 (40–60% biobased carbon content).
TÜV AUSTRIA OK Compost INDUSTRIAL to EN 13432:2000 > (biodegradation, disintegration, ecotoxicity, material characterisation).

Underway / pending completion

BPI Compostable Commercial Only certification. This validates that Bio-X™ Fiber meets the ASTM D6400 standard for compostability and confirms that the product will safely and completely biodegrade in professional composting facilities, leaving no synthetic residues or toxins behind.
Bio‑X™ is also currently under test / evaluation with the University of Tennessee, as well as Sports Labs in the United Kingdom.

Do the fibers need to be separated at end of life?

No. Turf and Bio X™ fibers can be composted together, provided excess mineral soil has been removed and the material is sent to a suitable industrial composting facility.

Where are industrial composting facilities available?
