SIS Pitches reveals 11 Pitches for the UEFA European Under-21 Championships

THE CLIENT – UEFA EUROPEAN UNDER-21 CHAMPIONSHIPS

Georgia and Romania will host the UEFA European Under-21 Championships in June. Georgia will provide 12 venues for the tournament.

THE BACKGROUND

The tournament is supported by a £31 million state-funded infrastructure programme aimed at building or reconstructing 11 venues, including stadiums and training pitches, in various locations such as Tbilisi, Batumi, Kutaisi, and surrounding countryside areas. This investment is a significant step for the future of Georgian football.

THE BRIEF

SIS Pitches was contracted to complete work on 11 of the 12 pitches. The project included constructing and maintaining pitches using SIS Grass Hybrid technology, ensuring elite playability for the tournament. Additionally, SIS Pitches was tasked with ongoing maintenance, especially for the Batumi Stadium, which will host the final match.

WHAT WE DID

  • Pitch Construction: SIS Pitches managed the complete scope of work for 11 venues. All pitches were stitched using SIS Grass Hybrid technology.
  • Maintenance: The in-house team maintained the pitches before, during, and after the tournament.
  • Key Venues: Batumi Stadium was a notable project chosen for the final, as SIS Pitches had previously constructed and maintained this venue.
  • Challenges: Despite a tight schedule, the team delivered the project on time, showcasing a commitment to quality and completion.

THE OUTCOME

SIS Pitches successfully delivered the pitches for the European Under-21 Championships, with Batumi Stadium holding special significance as both a construction and ongoing maintenance project. The work improved sports surfaces in Georgia and demonstrated SIS Pitches’ ability to deliver large-scale infrastructure within tight schedules.

We were in Georgia in 2020 with a last minute call from Batumi Stadium where we had to rebuild the pitch during the tough Covid times in winter for the first game in May.After our previous work, we have also been awarded the maintenance contract going forward. In preparation for the upcoming European Championship this summer, we have recently finished 11 pitches using our innovative SISGrass Hybrid technology.
