SIS International reconstruct the Stora Valla Arena stadium pitch

The Client – Stora Valla Arena

Stora Valla Arena, located in Sweden, is home to Degerfors IF, a football club competing in Sweden’s top-tier league, Allsvenskan. The stadium is a key venue for sports in Sweden.

The Background

SIS International was contracted to reconstruct the stadium pitch at the Stora Valla Arena. The project took place during challenging conditions, with temperatures frequently falling below zero and regular snowfall. Despite this, the project was completed in under two months, with the pitch turfed by April 21st.

The Brief

The project required a complete reconstruction of the pitch, including excavation, removal of the old heating system, and installation of modern systems to improve pitch quality and functionality. The brief also included the addition of synthetic surrounds.

What We Did

• Excavated the pitch to a depth of 450mm and removed the existing heating system.
• Installed a gravel layer, a lower rootzone, and an upper rootzone.
• Designed and installed a new irrigation system and a heating system, which was connected to the existing pitch-side system.
• Supplied and installed turf imported from the Netherlands within two days.
• Installed new synthetic surrounds using artificial turf supplied by SIS Manufacturing. A collaboration between SIS UK and SIS International teams completed this work.
• Partnered with local expert Simone Liljenberg, who provided valuable local knowledge during the project.

The Outcome

The Stora Valla Arena now features a fully reconstructed, high-quality pitch, completed entirely in-house by SIS International. The new systems and surfaces ensure improved functionality and durability, and the project stands as SIS International’s first construction project outside Stockholm.
