SIS Pitches completes £1.8 million project in Lincoln

THE CLIENT – YARBOROUGH LEISURE CENTRE.

In partnership with Lincoln City Council, Active Nation took on a transformative £1.8 million project to enhance sports facilities at Yarborough and Birchwood Leisure Centres.

THE BACKGROUND

The facilities, funded by contributions from the Premier League, FA Facilities Fund, and the Sport England Community Asset Fund, aimed to provide high-quality, durable sports surfaces to support local communities and promote greater sports participation.

THE BRIEF

Install two full-size 3G football pitches.
Renovate an existing hockey pitch.
Construct a running track at Yarborough Leisure Centre.

WHAT WE DID
FOOTBALL PITCHES

SIS Pitches installed two full-size 3G football pitches featuring the SIS Grass Synthetic Xtra surface, which is:

  • It is manufactured using robust fibrillated yarn for maximum durability.
  • Certified to FIFA Quality standards.
  • Designed to accommodate 50–85 hours of usage per week.

We’re excited to be a part of such a huge project that will have a big effect on the football, hockey and athletics landscape around Lincoln. The new surfaces will allow the local teams both junior and adult to play on quality pitches, having a positive effect on the local community and encouraging more participation in sport.

Cameron Thomson, Senior Contracts Manager, SIS Pitches

HOCKEY PITCH RENOVATION

The site’s sand-dressed hockey pitch was fully renovated to provide a high-performance playing surface for local hockey teams and schools.

RUNNING TRACK

Yarborough Leisure Centre became one of the first UK locations to feature SIS Pitches’ high-performance porous running track, constructed with:

  • A shock pad underlay for added comfort.
  • A rubber granule base for durability and resilience.
  • A polyurethane top coat for enhanced stability and surface binding.

This track can endure up to 50,000 athlete user hours per year, making it an excellent, cost-effective choice for local athletic clubs, schools, and colleges.

THE OUTCOME

Community Facilities: The upgraded sports infrastructure now supports various activities, from football and hockey to athletics, promoting inclusivity and participation.

Increased Usage: The new pitches and tracks are built to handle extensive use, ensuring they remain accessible to the community year-round.

Positive Community Impact: These upgrades provide high-quality sports facilities that rival those in larger cities, encouraging more people in Lincoln to get involved in sports.

The support of the Premier League, The FA and government enables the Football Foundation to help improve community sports facilities like this one across the country. Their funding has played a key role in delivering these new all-weather pitches in Lincoln and I am delighted for everyone associated with the City of Lincoln Council. This is one example we want to make people in Lincoln aware of, that they have the kind of quality pitches and changing rooms that are taken for granted in other cities. We will continue to support projects nationwide, but we cannot do this on our own, so we are encouraging organisations in the area to join our movement to deliver quality football facilities for people in Lincoln once and for all.Taking part in community sport at any level offers many benefits and rewards, not least the opportunity for people to enjoy themselves and socialise with different members of the community.

Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation

OFFICIAL OPENING

The upgraded facilities were officially unveiled on August 17 at a celebratory event hosted by Lincoln City Council. This marked the completion of a project that will serve as a staple for local sports development.

Whether you want to enhance community sports facilities or upgrade a multi-sport complex, trust SIS Pitches to deliver innovative, durable, high-quality solutions tailored to your needs.
