The Innovative Technologies Behind Modern Sports Pitches

SIS Pitches is a global leader in designing, constructing, installing and maintaining world-class sports pitches, from elite stadiums to community facilities – helping organisations choose the right surface and systems for their usage, weather conditions, performance, safety, and long-term value needs.

Speak to our team

A great playing surface depends on more than surface choice alone – even the best natural and hybrid grass pitches  can struggle if drainage, irrigation, airflow, and rootzone temperature aren’t properly managed, affecting playability, recovery, maintenance, and ROI. That’s where sports field management systems come in: the right combination of drainage, aeration, heating, irrigation, covers, and ventilation keeps fields playable for longer, reduces weather disruption, and supports more consistent performance.

What Are Sports Field Management Systems?

Sports field management systems are the technologies built into, beneath, or around a field to help control the conditions that affect surface performance. Depending on the venue, that may include vacuum drainage, subsurface aeration, undersoil heating/cooling, irrigation, pitch protection covers, or ventilation.

These systems matter because field performance is driven by plant health and factors such as water distribution, rootzone oxygen levels, temperature, and moisture balance play a key role in supporting plant growth, rapid recovery and disease prevention.

Why Field Performance Depends on More Than the Surface

A field can be built with the right grass, the right profile, and the right dimensions, and still underperform if the supporting systems are not in place.

Poor drainage can lead to waterlogging, soft surfaces, and postponements. Uneven irrigation can produce inconsistent growth and wasted water. Weak airflow and poor gas exchange can affect root health and disease pressure. Cold conditions can slow recovery and increase the risk of frost-related disruption. In high-use venues, these problems quickly turn into higher maintenance costs and reduced playing availability.

Types of Sports Field Management Systems

Vacuum/Irrigation Systems

DrainTalent

DrainTalent is a patented precision vacuum drainage and subsurface irrigation system that gives grounds teams control over moisture conditions. It uses vacuum technology to draw excess water quickly through the field profile during heavy rain. The collected water can then be stored and reused for future irrigation.

When moisture levels drop, the system irrigates evenly from beneath the surface, ensuring consistent water distribution throughout the entire rootzone. Driven by integrated weather data, DrainTalent reacts proactively to precipitation changes to maintain optimal moisture levels, supporting an ideal growing environment year-round. DrainTalent is for venues dealing with:

  • Repeated heavy rain
  • Waterlogging risk
  • High-intensity use
  • The need to reduce water consumption
  • Shallow construction profiles incompatible with conventional vacuum drainage systems

Vacuum/Ventilation Systems

Vacuum ventilation systems use vacuum technology to actively manage water and air through the soil profile and beneath the pitch. Instead of relying on gravity alone, they can pull excess water out of the surface quickly after heavy rain, and in some cases push air through the rootzone to help roots grow stronger and healthier. This means faster drainage, more consistent playing conditions, and less disruption from bad weather.

SIS AIR Core

SIS AIR Core is a subsurface aeration and vacuum drainage system designed to optimise rootzone conditions, create a stronger playing surface, and reduce pitch damage and maintenance costs. It can operate in vacuum mode to pull water out of the field and in pressure mode to push air through the rootzone, helping improve oxygen supply, nutrient uptake, and beneficial microbial activity.

In heavy rainfall, it can offer significantly greater drainage capacity than traditional systems. During the 2026 World Cup, SIS AIR Core protected a fixture in Estadio Monterrey after 95mm rain fell under 3 hours, removing all standing water in 10 minutes. SIS AIR Core is well-suited to venues that need:

  • Faster stormwater removal
  • Firmer and more consistent surfaces for improved player safety
  • Healthier roots
  • Better temperature distribution through heating or cooling systems
  • Lower risk of match disruption in difficult weather

SIS AIR Core Aquacycle

SIS AIR AquaCycle combines SIS Air Core with Formavoid® technology to deliver aeration, rapid drainage, and water reuse in one system. It can store up to 525,000 litres of water beneath the pitch for reuse. This is a strong option for venues that want to experience SIS AIR Core’s benefits plus:

  • Water storage and reuse
  • Up to 60% less power than comparable aeration and drainage systems
  • Improved sustainability performance
  • Uniform airflow across the entire pitch profile
  • Shallow pitch profile

Heating/Cooling Systems

SIS HEAT Core

SIS HEAT Core is a traditional hydronic undersoil heating system designed to control rootzone temperature. It supports healthier roots, seed growth in difficult conditions, improves stability and traction, and reduces the risk of postponements during cold weather.

During warm periods, the system can also circulate cold water to reduce soil temperatures, achieving up to 4 degrees cooler temperature at the surface level. This system is for venues that need:

  • Frost protection
  • Better winter playability
  • Rootzone temperature control
  • Improved recovery in cold/hot conditions

SIS HEAT Dynamic

SIS HEAT Dynamic is an electric undersoil heating system designed to provide instant uniform temperatures across the entire surfaces. It converts 95-98% of input energy into heat output, respondings within seconds. The system can be powered by renewable sources, and has helped clubs reduce fuel energy consumption by up to 67%.

With this innovative system, clubs can benefit from the heat protection advantages mentioned above plus:

  • Up to 2-3 × less installed power for equal or better performance
  • Significantly faster and more uniform heat
  • Improved energy efficiency
  • Low-maintenance design

Irrigation Systems & Accessories

SIS AQUA

SIS AQUA is a bespoke pop-up sprinkler irrigation system for sports grounds. The standard design for football ptiches uses 35 strategically placed pop-up sprinkler units, each individually controllable. The system can be automated or operated via remote or fixed control panel to ensure reliable operation when connectivity is limited.

  • Even water distribution
  • Remote and individual control
  • Improvedwater use efficiency
  • Enhanced durability of irrigation system components

SIS HYDROBOX

SIS HYDROBOX is designed to simplify the maintenance and management of pitch irrigation systems. It is a groundskeeper-led solution that makes irrigation systems more accessible and easier to maintain. This is useful for venues that look for easier access and management to irrigation heads, simplifying day-to-day irrigation maintenance.

Pitch ventilation & temperature control

SIS COVER

SIS COVER offers a range of pitch protection covers designed to control the microclimate and protect the playing surface. These include SIS COVER UV Light, SIS COVER Rain & Snow and SIS COVER Germination, which help reduce UV exposure, protect the surface from snow and waterlogging, and promote germination conditions. By managing these microclimate conditions, grounds teams can minimise grass diseases, , protect renovation and germination work, and reduce the risk of cancellations in extreme weather.

SIS FAN

SIS FAN is a pitch ventilation and air circulation fan for natural, hybrid, and synthetic fields. It can move cooler air from shaded areas toward sunny areas, reduce surface temperature by 7–8°C, and project airflow up to 62 meters. It also offers mist functionality with an effective distance of up to 50 meters.

How to Find the Right Sports Pitch technology?

The right answer depends on the type of facility, the surface, the climate, and the level of use.
