SIS Air Core

Subsurface aeration system that optimises rootzone conditions to create a stronger playing surface and reduce pitch damage and ongoing maintenance costs.

COMPLETE SUBSURFACE CONTROL

Introducing SIS Air Core, a subsurface aeration and rainwater management system that gives you control over your pitch growth conditions at the rootzone level and ensures you have a solution for when weather conditions threaten match day. This animation shows you how it works.

LAYING THE GROUNDWORK

Lateral drainage trenches are excavated, and geotextile protected membrane layers are laid. The 600mm closed master main pipes are laid the length of the pitch in two lines. With 150mm perforated air and drainage pipes running laterally in 3.0m intervals, with a gravel drainage layer laid and laser-graded.

A SUBSURFACE SYSTEM

Beside the closed main line and connecting lateral air pipes, lies a drainage collector pipe to collect water reaching the lowest level. Gravel layer, irrigation system and undersoil heating/cooling pipes are installed within a 200mm sand layer, before a 100mm rootzone completes the pitch profile.

WATER SEPARATOR

A concrete water separator is built at one end of the pitch behind the goal. This underground room is made airtight, features water submersible pumps and is used to pressurise and pull air through the network of pipes beneath the pitch.

PLANT ROOM

Within the stadium, the SIS Air Core equipment features powerful two-way fans, heat exchangers and air conditioning units for temperature control (optional), alongside control panels to manage the system. From the plant room or the grounds management room, teams can preset automated programs or override settings to control rootzone temperatures, moisture and oxygen levels. The system allows for real-time monitoring and the operation of both pressure and vacuum modes.

HEALTHY ROOT CONDITIONS

Pressure Mode: Air is pushed through the pipe network and forced up, moving through the soil profile. This enables a cleaner, more aerobic growing environment, promoting cell division, root growth, and the absorption of nutrients. By releasing carbon dioxide from the rootzone and supplying fresh oxygen, the system also promotes beneficial microbial activity, leading to healthier, more disease-resistant grass.

MAXIMISED HEATING OR COOLING

The upward movement of air helps with quicker distribution of warmth or cooling from heating/cooling systems. This ensures less delay in supporting plant health and consistent growing temperatures across the entire pitch are met sooner and more regularly.

DRIER SURFACE FOR BETTER PLAY

Vacuum mode: In heavy rainfall, regular drainage is boosted, and water is removed from the pitch profile significantly quicker. The system will pull the water through the rootzone and away from the surface, but also extract wastewater travelling in drainage pipes much faster for maximum efficiency. Regular maintenance routines will also benefit from the reduction of dew and surface moisture as a result of improved surface airflow.

By stabilising the pitch microclimate and keeping the surface dry, the system improves both playability and turf durability, preventing match cancellations while optimising operational efficiency for maintenance teams.

SMART WATER MANAGEMENT

Conventional drainage will bring excess water into the water separator, where levels are monitored by a smart automated sensor. If the water reaches a critical threshold and Vacuum Mode is not operated manually, the system will automatically trigger the vacuum feature. This ensures that water is pulled rapidly through the main pipework, with the pumps adjusting to the required speed to evacuate water from the stadium and into the main discharge network.

LEADING THE FIELD

SIS Air Core is an innovative, star performer in the industry and has quickly become a trusted subsurface management system promoting the healthiest natural and hybrid grass surfaces for sport all over the world. From cricket stadiums in the Himalayas to football stadiums in the Premier League and arenas hosting the world’s biggest tournaments, SIS Air Core gives grounds management teams the reassurance they need when planning high-level sports events.

Field and Operational Benefits

SIS Air Core is an innovative subsurface management system designed to proactively manage soil moisture levels and maintain optimal rootzone conditions. The system can operate in either a vacuum mode to pull water out of the pitch, or pressure mode to push air through the rootzone.

Fast water removal

In heavy rainfall, the vacuum mode can extract water from the surface at high speed, offering up to six times greater drainage capacity than traditional systems.

Match protection

Reduces risk of match cancellation by preventing waterlogging.

Optimal moisture

Proactively manages soil moisture levels and maintains optimal rootzone conditions.

Firmer field

Provides a firmer and more consistent field for improved player safety.

Plant health

Air exchange and moisture control improve root growth and support beneficial microbial activity.

Disease prevention

Controlling soil moisture helps prevent algae, black layer and other diseases.

Durability

Increases playing surface resilience to wear and tear.

Temperature management

Improves pitch temperature control through air distribution, enhancing the performance of undersoil heating and cooling systems.

GROUND CONTROL

SIS Air Core gives grounds teams direct control of key pitch conditions. Vacuum and pressure modes can be managed to optimise water removal, airflow, and rootzone conditions, all from an in-stadium touch screen or mobile/tablet device.

The system can also integrate with other technologies, including irrigation and heating systems. Automation can be enabled through in-ground moisture, gas and temperature sensors, or via an external weather station.

SIS Air Core can be installed with the Formavoid® system to create SIS Air AquaCycle, which helps reduce overall water consumption.

Vacuum Mode

The vacuum operation works by drawing air down from the playing surface through the pitch profile. This can help with the release of carbon dioxide from the surface.

Further to this, vacuum mode helps pull out dew from the playing surface.

This mode comes into its own during periods of heavy rain, maintaining near-perfect playing conditions while reducing unnecessary and costly postponements.

Pressure Mode

The pressure mode moves air up through the pitch profile, bringing oxygen to the root network, as well as helping regulate root zone temperature effectively throughout all seasons.

This active airflow mitigates the challenges of uneven sunlight and microclimates in shaded areas. Furthermore, by distributing air more effectively, the system can enhance the performance of undersoil heating and cooling systems.

SIS Air Core gives approximately 6 times more drainage capacity where it was tested against another non SIS Air stadium.”

Aeration, drainage and water reuse

SIS Air Core can be combined with Formavoid® technology to create SIS Air AquaCycle, an integrated solution for aeration, vacuum drainage, and smart water management designed to optimise pitch performance and water use efficiency.

Installed beneath the pitch, the Formavoid raft creates a high-capacity reservoir while enabling controlled airflow through the rootzone. Excess rainwater and irrigation water drain naturally into the raft, where it is stored and reused for irrigation, significantly reducing water consumption.

Together, SIS Air Core and Formavoid deliver an advanced system that protects playability and helps clubs meet sustainability goals.
